Résumé : |
This research aims at presenting the importance of punctuation in writing, especially the
comma, semicolon, and the colons. It shows how the effective use of punctuation marks;
more precisely the right use of the comma, semicolon, and the colons helps in conveying the
exact meaning and preventing ambiguity. To attain such aim, it is hypothesized that First year
students of English would promote their academic writing when they are likely aware about
the importance of using adequately the punctuation marks, especially the ones of our interest.
To investigate this research hypothesis, two data collection procedures were used: a
questionnaire and a test. The sample which consists of twenty students who were chosen
randomly among a whole population of freshmen LMD students at the Department of Letters
and English, Mentouri University-Constantine 1. The results obtained from the questionnaire
revealed that freshmen are aware about the importance and the impact that punctuation marks
namely the comma, semicolon, and colons play in writing; however, the analysis of the test
show that students get confused when it comes to practice. They put commas randomly and
encounter some difficulties with the use of semicolons. Therefore, students need intensive
practice outside the classroom in order to master the punctuation rules effectively and at the
same time enhance the quality of their writing. |
