second language when using or translating prepositions from their source language to the
target one, or vice versa. This study is divided into two parts: A theoretical chapter and a
practical one. The former begins with some definitions and theories which are related to the
topic being investigated, such as: Translation, transfer, Contrastive and error analysis, and
prepositions which are the core of this study. The practical part is based on a sample of twenty
sentences that contain prepositions translated by thirty third year English L.M.D students, at
Mentouri University-Constantine. These translated sentences are analysed to conclude that
learners of English as a second language transfer either positively or negatively from their

It aims at investigating learners‟ competence in translating legal terms, and also at shedding some light on the strategies they use and the problems they face when dealing with this kind of technical terms. It was hypothesized that if students used specialized legal glossaries, that the translation of this technical area requires, with more practice in the legal field, and also if they used adequate translation strategies, they would enhance their translation performance. Hence, some questions need to be answered as: What are the different strategies used by students in translating legal texts? And whether students‟ translations accuracy/ inaccuracy is due to the strategies they use when translating, or their familiarity/unfamiliarity with legal terms. The data were gathered by means of some research tools in the form of a questionnaire and a written translation test. The analysis of the data confirms that students‟ mistranslations are due to the lack of practice in translating legal texts and to their unfamiliarity with legal terminology. Their translation inaccuracy is also due to their ignorance of some legal concepts despite their use of dictionaries to help them. This can be seen in the failure of the students‟ translation in getting the meaning, because the meaning of some legal expressions is rarely literal. In the light of these results, some pedagogical implications have been provided as a starting point towards resolving this problem and helping the students cope with legal terminology and provide a more accurate translation. So, the hypothesis that we set at the beginning of this research is, if the bilingual dictionaries
used by second year students do not provide the linguistic context, then students will not
succeed in the translation of polysemous words. The data were gathered by means of two
research tools namely, a test and a questionnaire that were administered to a sample of English
second year students. The analysis of the data confirms the truth of the aforementioned
hypothesis because the examined students failed in the translation of polysemous words which
show that their bilingual dictionaries do not provide the linguistic context. The obtained data
confirm also that the bilingual dictionary is not a helpful tool for students to translate
polysemous words as, in most cases, it misleads them to choose the right equivalents, due to
the fact that they are not accompanied with examples that show the learner the use of each

by the students as well as the strategies they use to enhance their listening achievement. The
research questions were, First, what major difficulties that first year EFL students face in
listening comprehension are. The second question was, do first year EFL students use any
strategies so as to enhance their performance in listening comprehension? It has been
hypothesized that EFL learners may encounter difficulties associated with speech rate, lack of
background knowledge of the target language, and short term-memory. And, they may use
different kinds of strategies in order to enhance their achievement in listening comprehension. To
check for the validity of the settled hyotheses, a questionnaire was administered to first- year
EFL learners. After analyzing the data quantitatively and qualitatively the main results clearly
demonstrated that listening is the most difficult and complex skill to students. The obtained
results revealed that learners face some obstacles as well, related to: speech rate, memory
limitation, lack of prior knowledge and other difficulties. Furthermore, listening is far more
complicated, which necessitates the utilization of appropriate strategies in order to ameliorate the
learners’ achievement. However, The learners use some strategies but they still have difficulties.
