Our sample consists of 46 Master
two students and 10 teachers at the department of Letters and English Language, Frères
Mentouri University. The hypothesis adopted in this study sets out that involving Master two
students frequently into in-class debates would improve their speaking skill. To test our
hypothesis, we opted for a quantitative research methodology to collect numerical data
through questionnaires. Two questionnaires are used to know the teachers’ and students’
perceptions and attitudes regarding the use of in-class debates in promoting Master two
speaking skill. The results obtained have shown that both teachers and students welcome and
are in favour for the use of in-class debates as an effective pedagogical activity for promoting
learner’s classroom discussion, which in turn improves student’s speaking skill. Moreover,
both of the respondents encourage the use of debates as much as possible to develop other
aspects of the language; grammar, pronunciation, listening, culture, among others. On the
light of these results, the previously mentioned hypothesis is successfully confirmed; i.e., by
using alternative interactive activities such debates this would lead to develop the speaking

means of gathering information in order to verify the hypothesis. The dissertation includes
two main chapters. The first chapter represents the literature review about errors in language
acquisition and language learning. The second chapter is the practical part that deals with the
analysis of the results of the questionnaire. The results showed that students differ in their
preferences concerning the techniques used by their teachers to correct their errors, and that
the errors they commit are mainly due to developmental factors and the influence of the

attempts to discuss the use of the Oprah Winfrey Show as an educational authentic material in
order to give second year students at the Department of English at University of Constantine 1
the opportunity to enrich their vocabulary knowledge. It is hypothesized that if teachers use
the Oprah Show as an educational material on a regular basis, students will learn new items
and extand their vocabulary. To check the validity of the hypothesis, a teachers’ questionnaire
and a students’ questionnaire has been designed. The results show that both teachers and
students give a positive reaction towards using the Oprah Talk Show as a teaching material in
order to enhance students’ vocabulary. This, in turn, leads to the improvement of the students’

other words, this current research is concerned with the assessment of the bilingual
dictionaries, used by second year students, in terms of rendering English polysemous words.
So, the hypothesis that we set at the beginning of this research is, if the bilingual dictionaries
used by second year students do not provide the linguistic context, then students will not
succeed in the translation of polysemous words. The data were gathered by means of two
research tools namely, a test and a questionnaire that were administered to a sample of English
second year students. The analysis of the data confirms the truth of the aforementioned
hypothesis because the examined students failed in the translation of polysemous words which
show that their bilingual dictionaries do not provide the linguistic context. The obtained data
confirm also that the bilingual dictionary is not a helpful tool for students to translate
polysemous words as, in most cases, it misleads them to choose the right equivalents, due to
the fact that they are not accompanied with examples that show the learner the use of each
