Résumé : |
The present dissertation tackles the discrepancy between scholars behind classifying
Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things as a Bildungsroman. The analysis of the
protagonists’ psychological development is the means with which to address that. The
description of the social, political and cultural conditions of India serves to contextualise the
protagonists. Then follows a thorough depiction of their psychological formation, highlighting
the prominent events in their lives. Using Freudian notions and parental love theories, an
analysis is carried out to examine the problems and reactions of the protagonists’ psyches. In
the novel, the struggle of Indians is both mirrored by nature and aggravated by the latter’s
pollution. Subsequently, Using Ecofeminism, this research exposes the gender, racial and
environmental nocuous norms of India and studies their repercussions on the protagonists. The
findings of this research assert that facing trauma, the protagonists’ minds use the process of
fixation to survive. This mental state precludes the categorisation of the novel as a
Bildungsroman |
