Résumé : |
This study investigates the effects of dictation on the listening comprehension ability of
second year pupils at Houari Boumediene Secondary School. The major aim behind learning
English as a foreign language is to achieve a good level in its four skills: listening, speaking,
reading and writing. Concerning listening, learners need to understand the spoken language
that they listen to in real life situations; i.e., when they are engaged in conversation with
native speakers or while using media. The questions raised are: Do pupils get to the level they
expect from learning English and precisely from listening comprehension? Does using
dictation in teaching English as a foreign language improve their listening comprehension
ability? It is hypothesized that if second-year pupils engaged in dictation as a teaching
technique, their listening comprehension ability would be improved. This dissertation
contains three chapters, including one experiment. For this reason, two homogenous groups of
pupils were randomly chosen. Each group consisted of twenty pupils. One of the groups was
chosen as the experimental group, and the other as the control group. They both took a
listening test as a pre-test in order to measure their listening comprehension ability. For ten
sessions, the pupils in the experimental group were given dictation exercises. After that
another listening test was given, for both control and experimental group as a post-test. The
results of the t-test showed that dictation had a significant effect on the listening
comprehension ability of the participants in the experimental group. Finally, a questionnaire
was delivered to the pupils for checking their listening comprehension skill and their attitudes
towards dictation and its effect on improving this skill, the hypothesis was corroborated. |
