Résumé : |
In language learning, writing is an important skill that has a crucial role in developing the learners’
productive abilities. The latter could help in the academic field as well as in written social
interaction and communication. As technology facilitates Communication among people, which
makes the world a small village, texting has become one common and spreading mode of written
communication that has great effects particularly on formal writing. To this end, the present
research work has investigated the impact of texting on university students’ academic writing and
the reasons behind the students’ use of abbreviated word forms. The hypothesis set down is: ‘If
students use regularly texting, this will negatively affects their academic writing’. To check the
hypothesis, a questionnaire has been delivered to forty (40) first -year EFL students at the English
department of Frères Mentouri University, Constantine. The results of this study have shown that
texting affects negatively the students’ academic writing. Most of them use acronyms and
abbreviations while texting to save time and that this has become one of their daily habits. As a
consequence, the students encounter serious writing problems as using wrong tenses, wrong
spelling and informal vocabulary. |
