Résumé : |
The influence of the mother tongue in learning a foreign language is certainly indispensible.
This influence can either be positive or negative. In order to observe the circumstances under
which the influence is positive or negative, the present work was conducted to explore the use
of the mother tongue, Tamazight, in English as a Foreign Language classes. This issue was
chosen because it presents a general fact which happens in nearly all English as a Foreign
Language classes. The purpose of this investigation is to find out whether the mother tongue,
Tamazight, affects the pupils’ performance in speaking in English as a foreign language. We
shed light on how it happens, to what extent it influences speaking English as a foreign
language and in terms of what aspects. Moreover, we analyse interference as a factor affecting
the students’ speaking performance. This research is a case study of third year secondary
school pupils at different high schools in Bejaia. One research tool was used in collecting
data: the questionnaire. A teachers’ questionnaire was submitted online via e-mail to English
secondary school English teachers, and a students’ questionnaire was also submitted online
via e-mail to Third Year Secondary School pupils. The results revealed that the majority of
pupils as well as teachers held positive attitudes towards the negative influence of Tamazight
on pupils’ speaking skill in English as a foreign language |
