Résumé : |
In order to promote the right skills, attitudes and awareness to achieve the meaning
constructed in written texts effectively, leaners have to be engaged in multiple textual
modes. Graphic novels are means that use visual representations as extensions of text
to facilitate the processes of reading comprehension. In that, they create an enjoyable
atmosphere in the classroom, especially if teachers encourage their learners to read
them for pleasure. Such activity increases learners’ motivation to read more and allow
them to engage in active meaningful learning. Graphic novels help learners becoming
lifelong readers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of
reading graphic novels for pleasure in middle school classes of English and to evaluate
the degree of their influence on pupils’ reading comprehension. The underlying
hypothesis is that third year pupils at the elementary level may have positive
perceptions towards the role of reading graphic novels for pleasure in developing their
reading comprehension. In order to achieve such an aim and test our hypothesis, we
have administered a questionnaire for middle school teachers of English in Constantine.
The questionnaire served to enquire into middle school pupils’ reading comprehension
difficulties in English, attitudes and opinions towards reading for pleasure and the use
of graphic novels in foreign language classrooms. The results obtained from this
investigation confirmed our hypothesis and proved that reading graphic novels for
pleasure contribute greatly to the development of third year pupils’ reading
comprehension at the elementary level. On this account, teachers should consider
incorporating graphic novels in their reading lessons to help improve pupils’ reading
comprehension and motivate them to engage in the lesson with more enthusiasm. |
