| Résumé : |
This dissertation is employs the theme of the struggle over control between the Old
South and New South in America and adopts the southern Gothic style of writing. It is
about the decaying life of Southerners after the Civil war. This work examines the
theme of social structure in the South. The protagonist of the story, Miss Emily, is
depicted as a rich lady whose social standing is enough to keep her from having to pay
taxes and from adopting the new life imposed on the South after the Civil War.
Moreover, she loses her mind and she commits a heinous crime regardless of the
consequences. Faulkner used the southern Gothic style of writing that employs the
macabre, the grotesque, and irony to criticize the values of the American South |
