The study attempts to investigate and examines the use of code-switching in the
Algerian middle schools by both teachers and students in learning English as a foreign
language .The study takes place in Boughalouj Boudabouz middle school in Souk-Ahras .
The data are collected through two questionnaires. The first is designed for teachers and the
second is designed for students. The sample consists of 50 middle school students and 10
middle school teachers .The results show that code-switching is largely used in the Algerian
middle schools as a useful tool in the learning process. During our class observation we notice
that students use Arabic more than French. Most teachers consider code-switching as a
helping strategy since it saves time and facilitates students understanding. Code-switching is
always employed when explaining instructions, checking for understanding, and clarifying
misunderstanding. Students also consider code-switching as a necessity when teachers use
other varieties they understand better and feel more comfortable. To conclude this study aims
to shed the light on our schools in order to develop learning and provide students and teachers
with more opportunities in the learning progress. |
