Résumé : |
This study is an attempt to shed some light on the importance of nonverbal communication,
its functions and its effects on classroom management, as well as the most frequent negative
and positive nonverbal communication used by teachers in the classroom. Teachers’
exhibition of nonverbal communication is examined to see whether teachers are using this
notion effectively in the classroom or not. This is achieved through a classroom observation
of teachers’ nonverbal communication at the English Department of the University of Frères
Mentouri Constantine 1. Eighteen behaviours - having different impacts upon students both
negative and positive - were adapted to the specific needs of this research. The study
comprised five teachers teaching different subjects in the department of English. The results
gave evidence that teachers are exhibiting more negative than positive nonverbal behaviours
and that nonverbal communication is used generally ineffectively by most of the observed
teachers.
Key words: classroom management; nonverbal communication/ behaviour; teacher;
students; positive; negative. |
