Résumé : |
English phrasal verbs constitute an area of considerable difficulty for EFL learners because of
their inherent linguistic and grammatical features, such as idiomatic meaning and
unpredictable structure. This research aims to examine Master 1 Algerian students’
proficiency in using English phrasal verbs. We hypothesize that Master 1 students would find
difficulties in using phrasal verbs either as grammatical element or as lexical items. In order
to check our hypothesis validity, a test and a questionnaire are used as means of research. The
test aims at examining the actual difficulties that would face students when using phrasal
verbs both actively and passively, while the questionnaire aims to elicit students’ perceptions
of that issue .The sample of this study is made up of thirty six Master one students in the
department of Letters and English Language in ‘Mentouri Brothers’ University .The results
clearly show that Master one students of English do face difficulties when using phrasal verbs
both passively and actively, which confirms the hypothesis of the study. Moreover, they are
unable to use them correctly whether as grammatical combinations or as lexical vocabulary
items. |
