Résumé : |
Our dissertation aims at investigating the students‟ awareness of the difference between English and Arabic punctuation rules, and the students‟ attention to them when translating. In addition to that, we try to highlight the role of good background knowledge of punctuation rules in translating the exact meaning of the ST. For this purpose, we hypothesize that the students may be unaware of the difference between English and Arabic punctuation rules as they may not pay attention to punctuation when translating from English into Arabic. Furthermore, if the students have good background knowledge of punctuation marks, especially the colon, the comma and the semicolon; they will have good semantic translation. In the light of these hypotheses, we have conducted a students‟ questionnaire and a translation test with a sample of forty master one Applied Languages students at the Department of English, University of Constantine 1. The obtained results confirm the first two hypotheses: the students‟ unawareness of the difference between English and Arabic punctuation rules and their negligence to punctuation when translating from English into Arabic. The third hypothesis, however, which is that good background knowledge of punctuation leads to a good semantic translation, is rejected. |
