Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : Reading is an important task, and most prominently, a skill that many fields require to service the purposes and tools of communication of people who speak the same or different languages. This study is a quantitative investigation to describe the difficulties faced by students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in their first year of English at the Faculty of English at Brothers Mentori University in Constantine. More specifically, this study aims to highlight the consequences of a lack or absence of the pre-reading stage, to uncover irregularities arising from problems with reading comprehension and provide suggestions that could be adopted in foreign language teaching of reading comprehension. Survey data were collected through two reading tests and a questionnaire. The results obtained make it clear that a lack of comprehension of reading due to a lack of a mental preview of the material to be read and a lack of motivation constitutes a serious problem for English-language readers related to the study. Based on the results obtained, some recommendations are made to students and teachers to address the causes that constitute a challenge for effective reading comprehension.
