Résumé : |
The present study is intended to investigate the nature of the relationship between speed reading and skimming and scanning techniques. It attempts to examine the possibility of enhancing speed reading through teaching students skimming and scanning. A students' questionnaire and a test are carried out It takes the case of third year LMD students at Mentouri University Constantine. Thirty students are opted randomly.
Through the analyses of the students' questionnaire and the test results, it is clearly demonstrated that students are aware of the importance of speed reading, and of its suitable application. They also believe that skimming and scanning develop speed reading. The hypothesis we tested came to be validated, and results obtained revealed that speed reading can be enhanced through the use of skimming and scanning techniques |

Language Sciences effect skimming Scanning Reading Comprehension |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
Foreign or second language students often face many problems in trying to read and
comprehend written texts. Reading strategies, however, can contribute to facilitate the
reading process and help students to extract meaning about what they are reading. The
present study aims to explore the effect of skimming and scanning as two common reading
strategies on first- year English students’ reading comprehension at the University of
Constantine 1. The hypothesis postulated is that if first-year English students learned to use
reading strategies especially skimming and scanning more appropriately, they would be
able to apply them to cope with difficult English texts and become effective English
readers. In order to check this hypothesis, a questionnaire and a comprehension test were
administered to first-year university students in order to collect responses about their
awareness of and ability in applying skimming and scanning strategies when they read.
The data obtained from both the questionnaire and the comprehension test indicate that
first-year English students do not know how to apply skimming and scanning as reading
strategies to facilitate comprehension. Furthermore, the results suggest that these two
strategies are really effective to build up comprehension in short time. Thus, the hypothesis
postulated goes hand in hand with the results obtained. |

Skimming Scanning The Bottom-Up Models. |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
Reading is an important task, and most prominently, a skill that many fields require to
service the purposes and tools of communication of people who speak the same or different
languages. This study is a quantitative investigation to describe the difficulties faced by
students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in their first year of English at the Faculty of
English at Brothers Mentori University in Constantine. More specifically, this study aims to
highlight the consequences of a lack or absence of the pre-reading stage, to uncover
irregularities arising from problems with reading comprehension and provide suggestions that
could be adopted in foreign language teaching of reading comprehension. Survey data were
collected through two reading tests and a questionnaire. The results obtained make it clear that
a lack of comprehension of reading due to a lack of a mental preview of the material to be
read and a lack of motivation constitutes a serious problem for English-language readers
related to the study. Based on the results obtained, some recommendations are made to
students and teachers to address the causes that constitute a challenge for effective reading
comprehension. |
