Résumé : |
One of the problems mainly encountered by foreign learners of English is the problem of
interference. The present study seeks to investigate the main writing difficulties and problems
that are encountered by students shedding light on the problem of writing long sentences which
result from their mother tongue interference. For this it is hypothesized that if second year
students avoided mother tongue negative transfer, they would write effectively in English. Thus,
in order to check this hypothesis, a questionnaire, a pretest and a posttest have been administered
to a sample of 24 second year students of English at the Department of Letters and English
Language at the University of Mila. The results have revealed that almost all students wrote long
English sentences and they failed in constructing them because they think in their native
language, and then they translate their thoughts into English. The results also have shown that the
hypothesis has been confirmed. In this respect, it is recommended that students should avoid
transferring their mother tongue writing patterns into their English writings. |

Language Sciences effect skimming Scanning Reading Comprehension |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
Foreign or second language students often face many problems in trying to read and
comprehend written texts. Reading strategies, however, can contribute to facilitate the
reading process and help students to extract meaning about what they are reading. The
present study aims to explore the effect of skimming and scanning as two common reading
strategies on first- year English students’ reading comprehension at the University of
Constantine 1. The hypothesis postulated is that if first-year English students learned to use
reading strategies especially skimming and scanning more appropriately, they would be
able to apply them to cope with difficult English texts and become effective English
readers. In order to check this hypothesis, a questionnaire and a comprehension test were
administered to first-year university students in order to collect responses about their
awareness of and ability in applying skimming and scanning strategies when they read.
The data obtained from both the questionnaire and the comprehension test indicate that
first-year English students do not know how to apply skimming and scanning as reading
strategies to facilitate comprehension. Furthermore, the results suggest that these two
strategies are really effective to build up comprehension in short time. Thus, the hypothesis
postulated goes hand in hand with the results obtained. |

Applied Linguistics. Effect Skimming Main IdeaWriting Summaries |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
Ameliorating the learners’ level in reading and writing in a foreign language needs more
intelligent work and organized programs since he is supposed to reach such an average that
makes him able to deal with the native speakers of that language. The present research is an
attempt to examine the effects of skimming for the main idea on writing summaries. Within
the study, this issue is tested with reference to the relevant theoretical background including
skimming as important reading skill that leads the learner to determine the main ideas of a
material easily, in addition to the skill of writing a summary. It is hypothesized in this study
that skimming for the main idea has an effect on writing summaries. To check this hypothesis,
an exercise was designed and given for a sample of first year students of English at University
Mentouri Constantine and Teachers’ Training School. Data collection and findings give us a
clear view that skimming for the main idea can really affect our summaries; the close analysis
of students’ summaries shows that those who skimmed the text correctly wrote summaries
that contain only the main ideas while those who did not skim the text correctly develop
summaries that contain details instead of key information. Our objective is to show the effect
of skimming before summarizing in order to make students able to summarize correctly the
content of a material. |

Effect Using Prediction Strategy Gain Reading |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
The present dissertation aims at investigating the use of prediction as a reading strategy by
second year students of English as a foreign language in the Department of Foreign
Languages at Mentouri University Constantine. We hypothesis that if students of second
year use the prediction strategy in their reading, they would gain reading comprehension. In
order to test this hypothesis, a questionnaire was administered to70 students, in which they
provide us with serious answers. This questionnaire has been designed to collect the
students self point of view about their practice of reading in general, and prediction in
particular. The data obtained from this questionnaire indicated that these students of
English do successfully use prediction as a reading strategy. Moreover, the investigation
showed that there is a strong relationship between the use of prediction strategy, and
reading comprehension. Through this questionnaire, we gained a valuable information that
helps us confirm this hypothesis |
