Titre : John steinbeck’s vision of the american dream in the grapes of wrath : dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the master degree in british and american studies Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Meriem Rayen Lamara, Auteur ; H Boughenout, Directeur de thèse Editeur : CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : UNIVERSITE DES FRERES MENTOURI Année de publication : 2014 Importance : 50.f Format : 30cm. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Langue Anglaise Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : The basic aim of this paper is to investigate John Steinbeck’s vision of the American Dream in his Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Grapes of Wrath. The American Dream is a concept as old as the United State is. The notion of the dream was first introduced by the first settlers, notably the Puritans, who dreamt of a better, purified world, where they can be free. The American Dream developed throughout history and was highly determined by the American social life and its context. In October 1929, the Wall Street Crash changed all aspects of life in the United States.
Steinbeck illustrates the social life of the United States during one of the most tragic episodes of its history: the Great Depression. The Grapes of Wrath portrays the impact of the Depression on the life of the Dustbowl farmers and their eager attempt to find a better life after losing their farms. It also depicts the impact of historical and environmental events, and social behaviors on the fulfillment of the American Dream.
In the novel, the Joad family and the migrants thought that the American Dream was such a simple concept: go west, get a job, get a house, and become rich. Just like the first settlers who saw in the New World their 'Shining city upon a hill', the characters of the novel saw California as their Promised Eden. However, they did not realize that an ideal life was nearly impossible because the Promised Land was already taken and ruled by materialist, money-hungry men. The Joads fail at achieving their American Dream. This dissertation endeavors to identify the factors leading to the failure of the American Dream in the novel.

and American Studies Absence Morality T. S. Eliot’s Waste LandIndex. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : The basic interest in this dissertation is to conduct a substantial exploration of the absence of morality in T.S. Eliot‟s The Waste Land. This dissertation endeavors to exhibit Post-World War immorality and the way The Waste Land deals with it. The poem is a realistic depiction of European contemporary life. The goal is to determine how T. S. Eliot viewed the world around him and portrayed it in his masterpiece. In this regard, this study is helpful to convey the absent spirit, religion and culture in the poem. It also illustrates the 1920‟s immorality and the way it is presented in a literary work such as The Waste Land. This study focuses mostly on analyzing the different scenes and images of the barren world and immoral life the modern people went through, most notably, in religion, human relationships and sexuality. Eliot sees the world as fragmented and full of despair. Consequently, the fragmented way in which he presents his poem reflects the fragmentation in the lives of the people of The Waste Land.

The critique in question suggests that this approach is rather formalistic and tends to give little attribution (credit) to the diversity introduced by the creative skills of individuals. Thus, this dissertation examines two very different antagonists from two distinguished works. The purpose is to explore the construction of a villain by writers of dissimilar genre and style and therefore give the image of villainy unique dimensions in each setting: Abigail Williams in Arthur Miller’s tragedy, The Crucible, and Mr. Hyde in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Diplome : Master 2 Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/master/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4656 The distinctive use of the villain archetype in the crucible and the strange case of dr. jekyll and mr. hyde [texte imprimé] / Houda Driouche, Auteur ; H Boughenout, Directeur de thèse . - CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine, 2017 . - 33 f. ; 30 cm.
