In order to achieve this purpose, we hypothesized that students’ difficulties will diminish if they work cooperatively for differentiating between the rhetorical functions of description and explanation. For testing our hypothesis, a sample of 24 Linguistics and Applied Language Studies Master 01 students from the Department of Letters and English Language was randomly chosen. A pre-test, for the individual work, and a post-test, for the cooperative work, were administered and the results together with those of classroom observations were analysed. The results showed that using cooperative learning does facilitate to a certain range the analysis of the EST discourse, particularly in identifying and differentiating the rhetorical functions of description and explanation. Such findings confirmed to some extent our hypothesis.
