The present empirical study contemplates the method of cooperative learning in EST. it looks
into the importance of cooperative learning and how it assists in diminishing the difficulties
Master 01 students face when differentiating the rhetorical functions of description and
explanation. In order to achieve this purpose, we hypothesized that students’ difficulties will
diminish if they work cooperatively for differentiating between the rhetorical functions of
description and explanation. For testing our hypothesis, a sample of 24 Linguistics and
Applied Language Studies Master 01 students from the Department of Letters and English
Language was randomly chosen. A pre-test, for the individual work, and a post-test, for the
cooperative work, were administered and the results together with those of classroom
observations were analysed. The results showed that using cooperative learning does facilitate
to a certain range the analysis of the EST discourse, particularly in identifying and
differentiating the rhetorical functions of description and explanation. Such findings
confirmed to some extent our hypothesis. |
