Résumé : |
The white man’s burden is the title of a poem written by a British poet, Rudyard
Kipling. The expression of the white man’s burden is a characterization of imperialism which
justified the European policy as a noble enterprise. In other exact words, it justifies the
Europeans pretentions about their mission in Africa: helping and civilizing its savage,
uncivilized and primitive people.
It is quite interesting to search on the African culture before and after the Western
invasion taking into account the major historical events in Africa, specifically, the great
impact of colonization on African culture. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is a good
support to illustrate our study.
As a post-colonial writer, and through Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe provided his
readers with the genuine image of Africa before the European’s arrival. He described it in a
very realistic way as that continent composed of many organized societies inhabited by
civilized people. Achebe insisted on the brutal ruling system of the Europeans in Africa. The
latter affected the African’s way of life heavily and created a serious conflict between the
supporters of traditional Africa and the adherents to modern European culture in Africa. Thus,
this work relies on a descriptive format of the major historical events and their effects upon
the African nations, mainly Nigeria. |
