Résumé : |
The present study aims at investigating the significance of making inferences for reading comprehension. More precisely, we intend to investigate the effect of students’ ability to draw conclusions on their deep understanding of a text. It takes the specific case of second year LMD students at Constantine University1. This study is stimulated by the fact that making inferences strategy is vital for students to have a full understanding of a print as they are required to read between the lines in order to reach the implied meaning. To achieve the aforementioned aim, two means of research are used to collect data: A questionnaire and a test. The former is meant to gather as much information as possible about students’ reading habits, and the reading strategies they use, especially making inferences. The latter, however, aims at testing learners’ ability to draw conclusions from a written material in order to understand it fully. As might be expected, the results of the investigation have shown that the participants were quite aware of the significance of making inferences for the thorough understanding of a text. Alas, they have displayed a major handicap in drawing conclusions to get implied meaning. |
