Résumé : |
This research is an attempt to investigate the extent to which using predicting and inferring as reading strategies influence reading comprehension. It aims at investigating whether the students practice their thinking skills of predicting and inferring as reading techniques to promote their comprehension. To carry out our study, two questionnaires were submitted to a sample of second year LMD students (80 students) and a group of teachers (12 teachers) at the Foreign Languages Department, Mentouri University Constantine, to confirm the following hypothesis “if second year LMD students of English employed strategies of predicting and inferring during reading, they would promote their reading comprehension skill”. The results obtained using the two means of research (the students‟ questionnaire, and the teachers‟ questionnaire) provided us with a clear idea about the students‟ use of their abilities of predicting and inferring while reading, and another obvious idea about the teachers‟ evaluation of the important role of the two strategies. So, we reached the conclusion that it is important for the students to put into practice their thinking faculties of anticipating, and deducing in reading to facilitate their understanding. In addition, teachers should train their students how to use predicting and inferring in reading for effective comprehension. |
