Résumé : |
This dissertation aims at discussing and analyzing the role played by the Evangelical Church in the Victorian era. In the late 1830s, Britain witnessed an Anglican revival which was considered as a source of manipulation to the British social and political institutions. The present research is an examination of the rise of social inequality and women’s social mobility that were explicitly apparent in the literary text Wuthering Heights. Between the period of 1830 and 1850, interaction between the hierarchal groups is presented throughout the novel as well as a portrayal of religious oppression of women in this century. The study presents the practices of Evangelicalism using philanthropic institutions controlling the knowledge and capturing the Victorians’ consciousness. Therefore, those reactionary reforms were established to change the working class’s situation. The study explores the British repressive system which oppressed women particularly. That oppression took various forms, psychological as well psychical. In sum, this work aims to explore the way evangelicalism contributed in the breaking down of the socio-political reforms between the period of 1830 and 1850. |
