The attainment of fairly adequate translation equivalence is deemed a highly laudable procurement as it eloquently speaks of high ranks of linguistic fertility. No such accomplishment is feasible in the sharp shortage of grammatical awareness of both the source text and the target text. This research work attempts to investigate a very common and under-recognized problematical issue that many students appear to experience in their quotidian translation practices: understanding and translating the subjunctive mood. In our research we hypothesized that M1 students do not understand the subjunctive mood, which affect negatively their translations. To carry out our research and to ensure maximal apprehension of the topic at stake, we have gone for triangulation of research tools. We deployed students’ and teachers’ questionnaires as well as a written diagnostic translation test.The subjects’ pool is that of Master’s students reading for a degree in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Studies, whilst the teacher participants are those who have taught the translation module for at least a few years. The results yieldedby the research instruments mirror that the subjunctive mood is truly a cumbersome issue for students owing to a number of factors: 1) the lack of lectures speaking about modality in general 2) students’ indifference and their relatively limited knowledge and 3) students’ unwillingness to do informative search into the ins and outs of this linguistic component. Based on the inferences we have arrived at, towards the ending of our dissertation we have enumerated a number of recommendation which would, when properly implemented, alleviate the burden and eradicate various errors students make |
