Résumé : |
This study analyses the concept of motherhood in the African-American
community under the brutalities of slavery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved, and how
infanticide becomes an expression of the purest form of maternal love which
ultimately proves to be fatal. Beloved is a great novel that takes us through a
shocking journey to one of the most horrifying episodes in American history. It
provides us with an insight into the history of slavery, thereby enabling us to
approach predominant racist attitudes and practices in a more well-informed
manner. This research sheds light on the protagonist of the novel Sethe who is a
former slave and a mother of four children. The analysis of her character
demonstrates the harmful and destructive effects of slavery on the nature of her
relationship with her children. The aim of this paper is to examine the physical and
psychological scars of slavery that have pushed Sethe to commit infanticide and to
destroy the image of motherhood. |
