British and American Studies Toni Morrison motherhood slavery infanticide physical and
psychological scars of slavery. |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This study analyses the concept of motherhood in the African-American
community under the brutalities of slavery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved, and how
infanticide becomes an expression of the purest form of maternal love which
ultimately proves to be fatal. Beloved is a great novel that takes us through a
shocking journey to one of the most horrifying episodes in American history. It
provides us with an insight into the history of slavery, thereby enabling us to
approach predominant racist attitudes and practices in a more well-informed
manner. This research sheds light on the protagonist of the novel Sethe who is a
former slave and a mother of four children. The analysis of her character
demonstrates the harmful and destructive effects of slavery on the nature of her
relationship with her children. The aim of this paper is to examine the physical and
psychological scars of slavery that have pushed Sethe to commit infanticide and to
destroy the image of motherhood. |

Slavery Repression Trauma Disorder. |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
The present dissertation entitled The Recollection of Repressed Memories and Trauma
in Toni Morrison’s Beloved aims at showing the psychological disorder that is caused by the
legacy of slavery. When the institution of slavery was established in the United States, it
granted the white men the total supremacy to over control and to dehumanize their African
slaves. In Beloved, The degrading and the catastrophic experiences forced the characters to
react in different grotesque ways to break free from slavery. With the official ban of the
institution and after long years of freedom, former slaves are still tormented and imprisoned in
their past, especially the main character who suffered the most. They recollect their repressed
memories of the past with pain and agony which are seemingly more powerful and exhausting
to reappear every day in their lives |
