Résumé : |
The aim of this work is to investigate the difficulties that English students encounter when writing the abstract of their final research. To answer the questions asked, it is hypothesized that if students of English are aware of the norms of writing an abstract in matter of form, content, cohesion and coherence, they will produce a more effective abstract. To test the hypothesis, two tools of research are used. Fifteen randomly selected abstracts are analysed and a questionnaire is administered to a sample of forty English students. The results show that student errors are mostly related to grammatical cohesion where substitution/ellipsis, punctuation and sentence length, conjunction and reference are the most problematic features. The norms of abstract writing are not really complied with. The main conclusion to be drawn from this work is that cohesive ties are a recurrent problem in students’ writing. Some possible solutions to the problem are that the students need to deal with long texts during grammar activities, more technical report writing lessons to practice different cohesive devices and reading texts to enhance their language competence. |
