Résumé : |
The aim of this study is to have some insights about students‟ awareness of the English compounds and their ability to translate them into Arabic, as well as to know the difficulties facing them when translating them. It has been hypothesized that if students are aware of the rules of English compounds, this will positively affect their translation. To check the hypothesis, two questionnaires and a test have been used. A first questionnaire was addressed to 05 teachers of translation to see how they deal with the English compounds and to probe what difficulties their students have in translating them. The other questionnaire was addressed to the sample which are 20 randomly chosen Applied Language Studies Third Year Students at the Department of English, to see how much they know about English compounds. Then a test in which students translate into Arabic sentences containing English compounds. The results of the test show that students find difficulties in translating the English compounds because the majority of the answers were wrong. The main conclusion is that English compounds should be taught from the very beginning as a system and not just as a haphazard collection of unconnected words |
