Résumé : |
Reading is considered as the most important tool to learn any language. It has an effective role
in improving students’ vocabulary acquisition. Students do not possess a great stock of
vocabulary because they are not exposed to intensive reading which is regarded as a must at
university level to achieve effective writing. This study is conducted to examine the role of
intensive reading in increasing the size of vocabulary knowledge of the third-year LMD
English students at the University of Constantine 1; i.e., it aims at finding out whether the
students, who are frequently exposed to intensive reading, would improve their vocabulary
acquisition. To probe this hypothesis, we relied on two questionnaires that have been
submitted to teachers and students. The students’ questionnaire is given to 40 students and the
teachers’ questionnaire is directed to 10 teachers in order to gather the necessary data that will
test out the hypothesis about the effect of intensive reading on vocabulary acquisition. After
the analysis and the interpretation of the questionnaires, the results obtained reveal that
intensive reading helps students to improve their English vocabulary acquisition to a greater
extent. |
