Résumé :	The aim of this thesis is to summarize the problems that face American correctional and detention facilities nowadays, and how the bureau of prisons (BOP) and other concerned entities such as the Department of Justice (DOJ) try to counter the climbing estate of violence, overcrowding and recidivism and some other problems such as gangs that may affect the safety of prisoners as well as the correctional officers in charge of such facilities. Drugs, rape and sexually transmitted diseases as well as the incarceration of mentally ill persons included are compromising the statue of the prison system as a correctional one. In addition to that, this work evaluates also the American prisons and the detention camps established abroad and the severe condition of the inmates and detainees housed inside them.
