Résumé : |
The present research intends to discuss one of the prevailing themes in Henry
James’Daisy Miller which is external and internal beauty. It tends to highlight the idea
from which Henry James built and perceived beauty as a misconception that the society is
performing. A clash of civilizations is also discussed through the same theme, since the
European one is perceived as the sophisticated one, unlike the American which is
expected to be shallow and superficial. The prevalence of the sense of external
appearance, and not mysticism, throughout the narration of the novellasuggests that Henry
James is condemning the social standards of the higher class, depicting it as a judgmental
one which is believed to be a direct outcome of class stratification and materialism in the
said society. |
