Résumé : |
This research paper aims to investigate the ability of students to detect humour, mainly culture-based humour, in the English language. Additionally, it takes into consideration their capability of distinguishing between its types. It is hypothesised that if students are not exposed to the culture of the language; they would not be able to detect and understand humour. In an attempt to test the hypothesis, a questionnaire and a test were given to a sample of master one students Applied Languages. The results show that most students were not able to detect humour, especially culture- based ones. Nevertheless those who are in contact with the culture had relatively better results. Concerning their identification of the types, most of their choices were not correct. This brought us to the conclusion that the absence of cultural background may affect the comprehension of humour in a negative way. |
