Résumé : |
This study aims at finding the reasons behind students’ misuse of temporal prepositions
and checking whether students are aware of the difficulty of the temporal prepositions. It
also aims at increasing students’ awareness of the importance of learning the use of second
language temporal prepositions in enhancing their production and their comprehension as
well as gaining an acceptable level of proficiency while using the target language .This
dissertation seeks for confirming the following hypothesis: Raising the foreign language
learners’ awareness of the importance of using English temporal prepositions correctly
would help them gain an acceptable level of proficiency while acquiring or learning a
second language. In order to test our hypothesis and to reach the goals of this research
work, qualitative data are gathered through the use of two questionnaires that are directed
to Second Year grammar teachers and Second Year University students studying English
as a foreign language at Constantine1 University. The obtained results show that as a
second language acquisition is different from the acquisition of the first language, students
need to learn the grammar of second/foreign in order to know both the language structure
and use. Prepositions in general and temporal prepositions in particular are important
grammar topics that should be introduced explicitly and implicitly with a variety of
activities (listening, speaking, reading, writing, fill in the gaps and multiple choices
activities). Consequently, this research corroborates our suggestion that is the importance
of the correct use of these particular words in the acquisition of a second language. On the
basis of this investigation, it is recommended that teaching / learning temporal prepositions
use in relation to another grammar lesson(s) that is verb types, tense and aspect would help
second / foreign language learners overcome the difficulty of temporal prepositions
learning and use. |
