Résumé : |
Most English as a foreign language (EFL) learners face difficulties to write
their academic compositions. The pupils of El Katania middle school, as a sample of
the Algerian middle school pupils, find many problems writing their paragraphs
effectively. Some of these problems are: the misuse of grammar and mechanics rules,
the limited number of vocabulary…etc. Because of that, they are almost complaining
about their problems to write their English academic compositions.
The present study aims at investigating the effects of using cooperative group
work in teaching writing to 4th pupils of English as a foreign language. Thus, we
hypothesize that the use of cooperative learning would enhance pupils’ writing. To
verify the validity of this hypothesis, we have conducted an experimental study. Two
tests have been administered to the pupils. One is used for asking pupils to write
individually and another for asking them to write in groups. The experiment is carried
out through the analysis and the comparison between the different errors that are
found in both individual and group writing. The results of the 1st test show that pupils
made a huge number of errors in different aspects of writing. In comparison with the
results of the 2nd tests which show that the number of the pupils’ mistakes has
decreased and there are some kinds of mistakes that have disappeared at all in the
group productions.
Through the comparison of both pupils’ individual and group writing, we can
say that the use of cooperative learning has positive effects on the pupils’ writing. So,
it can enhance their writing. The obtained results would guide as to provide some
suggestions for the effective use of cooperative learning in the classrooms.
