Résumé : |
This dissertation attempts to shed light on the common errors of using comma rules and
their effects on cohesion in English writing. Commas are used to separate thoughts within a
sentence allowing the reader to mentally pause and assimilate the full meaning of the
sentence. Correspondingly, the ignorance of comma’s rules can alter the entire sentence’s
meaning. There may appear in students’ writings some practical and theoretical gaps when
they use commas in their works. Students, most of the time, fail to utilize such a mark
correctly not only because they lack practice of it, but also, because they do not even know
the theoretical norms concerning its use. Commas are frequently used among all punctuation
marks, and this helps to show the degree of difficulty that most students have with them.
Accordingly, students’ productions reflect the unawareness of comma rules through its
misuse: they may face difficulties and confusion (comma splices and comma faults) which
reveal a certain uneasiness.
The population of this study is a group of Algerian Third Year L.M.D. students of the
Department of Foreign Languages at Mentouri University of Constantine. This sample has
been chosen to investigate the different areas where students make comma faults. To this end
a test has been carried out on a group of twenty students who were asked to insert the comma
where appropriate.
On the basis of the results, the hypothesis we tested has been confirmed, in that knowing
comma rules induces the opportunities of producing clear, right, and well structured
sentences. |
