Résumé : |
This dissertation aims is to investigate the use of intonation in asking English questions by
Master One students of Applied Languages Studies at the University of Constantine. In addition
to this, we aim at getting insights to the way teachers teach and learners learn intonation of
questions in order to locate their responsibility for students’ present proficiency in mastering this
aspect of the language they are learning: English. We hypothesized that most of these students
do not produce English questions using the corresponding intonation for every question type. To
check our hypothesis, we used two tools. One is teachers’ and students’ questionnaires. Second
is a diagnostic test in which students were recorded as they asked questions in a role-play. After
analysing the data obtained from the questionnaires, and consulting intonation charts provided by
the software used to analyse students utterances, we reached the coming conclusions. Our
hypothesis was not confirmed for Wh-questions and Tag questions and it was confirmed for
Yes/No and Alternative questions |
