Résumé : |
In the post-colonial discourse, the east and west have always been put in a binary
opposition. Heat and Dust presents the opposition between east and west based on difference
and most importantly a process of inferiorization of the east. The west has stereotyped the
orient with everything that the west is not. By exploring the novel, the research aims to reveal
these attractive elements of difference which made superior British fall for the periphery and
to exhibit the source of these differences. It attempts to prove that the reason for this attraction
is found in the limitations of the western British culture which is supposedly superior, thus,
the research challenged the superiority of the western cultures and the inferiorization of the
oriental ones. The study is divided into two chapters in which the first highlights the
theoretical background that manages the theories and the ideologies behind the behaviours of
the characters such as, Orientalism, Eurocentrism, and determinism. The second chapter
analyses the experiences of the characters in accordance with the aforementioned theories. It
highlights, through characters, the Westerners' inferiorization of India as well as their fall for
it. The research displays the binary opposition and reverses the stereotypical image of the
west's superiority by shedding light on India's spirit of collectivism. |

Camusian absurdism Albert Camus Kurt Vonnegut rgson’s duration Nietzsche Sartre. |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This dissertation examines and compares Albert Camus’s The Stranger (1942) and Kurt
Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five (1969) in order to show how the spread of absurdism resulted in
parallels between the two works. The Stranger is one of the most celebrated literary works of the
twentieth century, and Camus’s testament of the absurd philosophy. The novel does not only put
forward Camus’s philosophy of the absurd but to a great extent depict his personal struggles and
trauma in the modern world that highly contribute to the foundation of the absurd. Slaughterhouse
five is also a novel that is considered one of America’s most influential, controversial and praised
novels in the post-modern era, it exhibits largely Kurt Vonnegut’s struggles in World War Two
and his post war mental state that add to the comparison of the two novels. The work examines the
novels from a Camusian absurdist stand point, it also alludes to major nineteenth and twentieth
century thinkers, Bergson Nietzsche and Sartre, in order to grasp the absurdist philosophy and point
out the similar conceptions presented in the two novels. |

Translation is analysed, aiming at showing the advantages and disadvantages of this
type of translation, and discusses possible ways in which this tool may be used in
order to translate texts from Arabic into English in a more accurate way. The
importance of this topic is driven from the need of quick translation, especially online,

language sciences Comparative Study Whole-Class Work Strategies |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
Teachers of English as a foreign language are in constant search of what may help
their learners increase their reading comprehension. Strategies applied by teachers in
classes are seen as important variables which may have positive effects on readers’
comprehension. This research is an attempt to investigate the degree of the impact of
using whole-class and pair work strategies in enhancing pupils’ reading comprehension.
It aims at delineating which one of the strategies namely whole-class or pair work is
more effective in enhancing learners’ reading comprehension. To carry out our study, an
experimental design was opted for. We divide it into two parts in which the treatment of
the experiment is reserved for the participants in part one and part two. The learners
are supposed to read one informational text. Their reading comprehension is tested and
their achievements are marked. The t-test for related groups is used to determine
whether the obtained results are significant or not. Making the needed substitutions in
the t-test formula helps us in comparing the value of the observed t with the critical one
corresponding to the chosen level of significance and the number of the degrees of
freedom in both parts of the experiment. The obtained results are found to be
significant. This leads us to confirm that both strategies namely whole-class and pair
work enhance readers’ comprehension as stated in the hypotheses. After comparing the
findings of the two parts we found that pair work strategy is more effective than wholeclass
strategy in enhancing readers’ comprehension. |
