Résumé :	This research aims at exploring the influence of the pragmatic competence on the translation performance of first year Master English students at the University of Mentouri Bros., Constantine. It attempts to examine whether or not students’ difficulties in translating phatic expressions are the result of their unfamiliarity with English language culture. To achieve these aims, we hypothesise that if students have not sufficient pragmatic background in English, they will not be able to translate phatic expressions into Arabic. To check the validity of this hypothesis, a questionnaire and a translation test are administered to a sample of 20 of first year Master students at University Mentouri Bros. of Constantine. The obtained results show that the students’ translation performance has been unsatisfactory because they lack sufficient competence in both, pragmatic and translation. Therefore, this study tries to make the student aware of the influence of culture on translating such fixed expressions and helping them to enhance their performance, especially in the field of intercultural translation by giving some strategies to achieve a successful cross- cultural translation
