American and British Studies EDUCATION BLACK CARIBBEAN |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This dissertation deals with the underachievement of African-Caribbean children in the
British school system, a system that is now dominated by a National Curriculum. The
problem of Black Caribbean children’s underachievement is of major concern because
these boys are not getting qualifications, cannot access higher education and jobs and
therefore are marginalised and disconnected from society. Government policies have
been inadequate in meeting the needs of these boys. Even if standards in education
have continued to improve, Black Caribbean children have not benefited from this in
comparison to other students. The failure of Black Caribbean children continues to be
an alarming phenomenon, despite years of multi-culturalism and education for
‘diversity’. The reasons for their underachievement are complex. Before conducting
these however, it was necessary to review the history of the black Caribbean
immigration to Britain, i.e. the main reasons behind their coming to Britain, their
geographical distribution in Britain and their cultural background which is different
from that of the host country. |

American and British Studies Islamophobia Britain Attacks |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This thesis examines the changes that have occurred in the lives of the British
Muslims in the wake of 7/7 events. It discusses the issue of Islamophobia. The research
evidently reveals that Islamophobia is an intrusive element in the British society and shows
the reasons behind its spread after the terrorist attacks of London Bombings . My dissertation
attempts to explain that 7/7 attacks intensified Islamophobia in the British society which has
immediately turned its Islamophobic beliefs into a stern backlash against Muslims living in
the United Kingdom. In response to the backlash , the Muslim community condemned all
acts of terrorism and has attempted so often to build bridges with other communities through
launching and participating in interfaith activities |

British and American Studies Cultural Revolution 1960s Britain |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
Despite the many researches by many prominent historians on the period of the Sixties in Britain, little was devoted to project the Cultural Revolution that took place during that period. Thus, it is quite interesting to investigate the process of the evolution of the Sixties Cultural Revolution in Britain, with the focus on the working-class youth as its generator. The youth culture and the music culture of the Sixties were the by-products of both, the post-Second World War affluence and the international influences coming mainly from America. These emerged rebellious subcultures succeeded in breaking all the taboos and drove the whole society into unprecedented era of secular permissiveness. Yet, the role the youth and music cultures played in the Cultural Revolution is still a matter of debate. Therefore this study cites the political, economic, social and cultural status of post-Second World War Britain, assesses the significance of youth culture and music culture, and argues for the existence of a Cultural Revolution during the Sixties in Britain, with the working-class youth at its forefront. |
