Résumé : |
The present dissertation, a total of three chapters, is intended to investigate the effects of large
classes on students’ oral performance on the basis of the attitudes of both students and teachers.
The objective of the investigation is to find out how the large class affects the learning of the
speaking skill. The basic hypotheses adopted in this study sets out that, if students study in large
classes, then their speaking ability will not be improved and that if teachers teach large classes,
they will not be able to achieve all their educational goals. In order to achieve the objective of
this study, two questionnaires are used; one for teachers of oral expression, and another for third
year LMD students of English from the department of foreign languages at Mentouri Brothers
University of Constantine. The results obtained from the analysis of the two questionnaires have
shown that large classes make the learning as well as the teaching of the speaking skill a very
challenging task. Both teachers and learners are unsatisfied with the big number of students per
group because this creates inappropriate learning conditions. Such conditions may lead to noise,
lack and unequal opportunities for students to participate and talk, and teachers cannot achieve
their teaching objectives. So, the large class hinders the improvement of learners’ oral
performance. In short, the results have confirmed the stated hypotheses |
