Humor is one of the most defining aspects of humanity. It is an integral part of everyday communication. When trying to translate cultural joke; a number of factors need to be taken into consideration, such as linguistic and cultural aspects, and that what make the translators‟ task tough. The reason why one translates cultural jokes is, usually, to convey a message to someone whose culture and language differ from one‟s own and this prevents direct communication. This study investigates the problems that translators tend to face in the process of translating cultural jokes from English into Arabic and if the sufficiency of cultural background accompanied with suggested solutions can help to solve these problems. It is by means of a comparative descriptive analysis of both English and Arabic version.
In fact, cultural jokes are selected rather than the other types (linguistic and universal jokes) because the former rely on the structure and manipulation of words and the latter are common and translatable |
