Applied Language Studies Translating British Political Terms |

Résumé : |
The present study investigates the difficulties E.F.L students face during the translation of
British political terms into Arabic. It also investigates the causes of their inability to find
the appropriate equivalents of British political terms. For this, the research hypothesis
advanced is that : if Master one students know the meanings of British political terms and
their appropriate context they will translate them correctly into Arabic. To check this
hypothesis, a test was administered to a randomly selected sample of twenty five Master O
One students of Applied Languages Studies during a normal session, to be translated into
Arabic. The test consists of fifteen political terms taken from different speeches delivered
by three British politicians, Thatcher, Blair and Cameron. The analysis of the results has
shown that learners encounter problems while translating the terms and most of them are
not capable to give the appropriate Arabic equivalent. Such a difficulty is mostly due to
their lack of political background knowledge, thus insufficiently exposed to political
terminology; and also to their recourse to and opting literal translation which lead to
mistranslation. According to the such results, the research hypothesis is to some extent
confirmed. |
