Language Studies Students Attitudes Error Correction Techniques |

Résumé : |
Many linguists and researchers differ in their views about how the target language is acquired.
Yet, most of them agree on one aspect which is the role that errors play during such process.
It is said that errors are very important in the acquisition/learning process, and that correction
of these errors can help the learner to better improve his command of the target language. It is
also believed that error correction should be done appropriately and efficiently, and that the
use of certain techniques in correcting these errors may have different impacts on the process
of acquiring/learning the target language. In other terms, the learners’ attitudes towards the
techniques used by their teachers to correct their errors may differ. The aim of this research is
to investigate the attitudes of First Year LMD students at the University of Constantine 1
towards the techniques used by their teachers in correcting their errors and the eventual
sources of their errors. Therefore, we hypothesize that students’ attitudes towards error
correction are influenced by the techniques used by their teachers in the classroom. Thus, a
sample of First Year LMD students of English was taken, and a questionnaire was used as a
means of gathering information in order to verify the hypothesis. The dissertation includes
two main chapters. The first chapter represents the literature review about errors in language
acquisition and language learning. The second chapter is the practical part that deals with the
analysis of the results of the questionnaire. The results showed that students differ in their
preferences concerning the techniques used by their teachers to correct their errors, and that
the errors they commit are mainly due to developmental factors and the influence of the
interaction with native speakers who use different varieties of English. Thus, it is suggested |
