Résumé :	This dissertation is about the issue of spiritual isolation, the search for identity and The quest for understanding in McCullers’ The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. The novel tells the Story of four principal characters –a black doctor ,a labor agitator ,a restaurant owner ,a young girl – from multiple points of views. These characters share a common obsession with the fifth central character, a deaf mute named John Singer. McCullers with a factual style and deep insight into human psychology ,writes about the deep feelings of human souls without an iota of vulgarity which gives her work a universal significance
