We can never imagine the importance of reading as a language skill. For the betterment of
that source of gaining infinite number of information, enjoyment and other aspects, the
reading skill has been studied for a long time and from different perspectives. This research
attempts at exploring the importance of a particular innovative reading skill which is known
as “speed reading” skill in the reading instruction as well as this technique’s impact on
another crucial reading element which is “reading comprehension”. In other words,
investigating whether Speed reading skill could be advantageous to improve students’ reading
comprehension if learners are provided with special courses where they could have chances to
know, learn and practice this technique. The aim of the study is to explore that implementing
speed reading technique in the curriculum to make students more knowledgeable about speed
reading skill in general, its various techniques and methods, in particular, would enhance
students’ reading comprehension. The general questions were about what speed reading skill
is, its different methods, how could it be learned, in what conditions, and how it would affect
students reading’ comprehension. The educational setting in which this study took place is the
Foreign Languages Department, Faculty of Letters and Languages, Mentouri University,
Constantine. Our investigation was carried out through the administration of two
questionnaires: one for the teachers and the other for students. These questionnaires revealed
students’ interest in reading, their areas of difficulty while reading, their prior knowledge
concerning speed reading skill and their desire to learn it if it proves beneficial for their
reading comprehension’ enhancement. On the basis of the obtained results, we figured out |
