Résumé : |
The current research deals with a problematic area in language learning which is
spelling errors and confusion in the English spelling. It aimed at investigating the
main areas and reasons behind confusion in the English orthography. It is
hypothesized that if learners were aware of spelling rules, strategies, and the
difference between spelling and pronunciation, they would not make spelling errors.
To collect data, two means of research were used; the first one is a questionnaire
handed out to four teacher of written expression subject, whereas, the second one is
a test administrated to sixty-seven (forty per cent) students. The obtained results
revealed that confusion in the English orthography could be the result of many
reasons which are learners’ lack of knowledge about spelling rules and their
exceptions, and strategies, the difference between spelling and pronunciation,
transfer from other languages, and the overgeneralization of some spelling rules. The
present study showed that spelling is an important skill in writing and, therefore,
written expression teachers’ should provide their students with the most important
spelling rules and strategies whenever it is needed. |
