This dissertation aims to emphasize how the novel perpetuates the patriarchal attitudes of the society despite the fact that it belongs to a completely new genre in Literature which is the gothic novel. This work traces back the origins of the Gothicism and its elements in fiction. To the aim of analyzing the characters’ attitudes towards the female and its social status as portrayed by Walpole, it was deemed necessary to tackle gender roles as criticized by feminism.
