Résumé : |
The current research work aims at highlighting the problems encountered and the strategies
used by third year students of English at the University of Frères Mentouri, Constantine, in
translating medical terms from English into Arabic. More precisely, it tends to reveal the
difficulties that students face when they translate medical terms and accentuate the
importance of using accurate strategies that may help them to produce an appropriate
translation. Accordingly, it is hypothesized that if students have enough background
knowledge related to scientific translation and medical terminology, they will be able to
translate medical terms. To achieve the research objectives, a questionnaire and a test were
used for the data collection. The former aims to know the students’ knowledge and familiarity
with scientific translation and medical terminology. The latter attempts to investigate the
students’ ability in translating medical terms and the strategies used during the process. The
results obtained revealed students’ difficulties in finding the appropriate meaning of the terms
and using appropriate strategies due to their unfamiliarity with scientific translation and
medical terminology. Subsequently, the hypothesis was confirmed. In the light of these
findings, students need to learn vocabulary related to science as much as possible.
Furthermore, it will be quite helpful for them to use bilingual dictionaries English /Arabic in
order to select the appropriate medical terms in the Arabic language. |
