This dissertation aims to investigate the effectiveness of communicative language teaching approach to enhance students’ oral proficiency. The following hypothesis; if teachers use communicative language teaching; students’ speaking skill will be developed, has emerged from the problem that most students cannot carry on a spontaneous and fluent speech using the target language. This is usually the result of traditional methods followed by teachers, which focus on teaching the language as a set of grammatical rules and memorization of vocabulary. The dissertation contains two chapters which explain the different characteristics of communicative language teaching and make it helpful in acquiring a target language; also we described its effects on student’s oral production. To confirm the hypothesis, two questionnaires were administered to oral expression teachers and third year students of English at the University of “Des Frère Mentouri”, Constantine, to explore and identify their attitudes about the speaking production in a communicative language teaching framework. The collected data confirms that the communicative language teaching approach is a very effective approach to develop students’ speaking skill in English. Finally, this study suggests a set of strategies, techniques and procedures for teachers that can guide them toward an anxiety-free and motivating atmosphere in the oral class |
