Jane Eyre contributed to the feminist question through her quest for defining an identity that is hers and gaining an autonomous thinking. In this regard, this dissertation studies the social and historical backgrounds of the Victorian era, of women status, in addition to women’s portrayal in literary works of the era. The present research also involves an overview about madness as a symbol in feminist literature, and the anxiety of authorship in the nineteenth century. This research aims to shed light on the characteristics of the Victorian society, gender role and women position at that time. I intend to scrutinize women’s status in literature and the quest of women writers in the nineteenth century. Of particular interest to this study is the uniqueness of Jane Eyre as a model of a protagonist whose strong and independent character was formed under a nexus of male characters’ impact on her.
