Résumé : |
The present research sought primarily to investigate learners’ of English
awareness and familiarity with English idioms and the degree to which idioms
affect the simplicity of comprehension and interpretation. This was attempted
through investigating their comprehension skill which, as hypothesized in the
present work, is likely to be hindered by their insufficient knowledge about
English idiomaticity. Idioms are expressions with a figurative meaning usually
difficult to understand solely on the basis of the literal meaning of their
individual constituent word. In the course of this study, first year master learners
of English at “Mentouri Brothers” University of Constantine represented the
sample population of this study. Their comprehension of language discourse
(English) has been tested in order to find out whether it is/is not hindered by
their lack of knowledge about idiomatic expressions. The research results have
shown that learners should improve their background knowledge about idioms
and idiomaticity so that their second language comprehension would be
enhanced. |
